About the practice

Useful
curiosity.

I'm Ryan Tyreman. I came to learning design through a claims queue, an escalation line, and a restaurant floor.

Sine Language is my portfolio and working laboratory for digital learning design, based in Burnaby, British Columbia.

The short version

I make hard things easier to enter.

I'm interested in the moment when a difficult subject stops feeling closed and starts feeling navigable. My work combines instructional design, research synthesis, writing, interaction, and AI-assisted production to turn material that already exists into something a person can actually use.

Training · guidance · synthesis · AI-supported production

Where this comes from

Ten years explaining decisions that had to work.

For the past four years I've worked at Pacific Blue Cross, British Columbia's not-for-profit health benefits provider. I've moved through customer service, a temporary fraud and audit posting, provider support, and now extended health claims adjudication.

Before that I spent nearly four years at TELUS, ending on the Client Resolution Management Team. That team is the last stop for a file before it reaches an executive, and it carried resolution authority up to ten thousand dollars.

Before either of those I managed food and beverage, including the build and opening of a flagship location during COVID. That is where I learned how fast a training document falls apart when someone has to follow it at seven o'clock on a Friday night.

It adds up to ten years of explaining complicated decisions to people who were tired, skeptical, or already angry, and then living with whether the explanation worked. That is the experience I design from.

Why the portfolio is broad

Six subjects. One test.

AI fluency, learning games, digital fluency, sound and synthesis, philosophy of mind, and local computing are six versions of the same question: can I find the structure that lets another person understand something and then act on it?

I pick subjects that give me trouble, because those are the ones that show whether the method actually works.

How AI shows up here

Accelerant, not alibi.

AI tools support research discovery, outlining, alternative explanations, editing, and some visual exploration. I set the learning strategy, verify consequential claims against primary sources, make the instructional and design decisions, and remain accountable for the final work.

Anything here that touches law, privacy, or regulation carries its sources and the date it was last checked. Where a claim is my synthesis rather than an established framework, it says so.

Designing from inside the problem

In the AI work especially, I am also the audience. I work inside a regulated Canadian workplace and have to figure out what these tools are safe to do on the same terms as the people I'm designing for.

A portfolio in motion

New work arrives as it clears review.
